    Server consolidation P2V - Hyper-V

    Hi Guys,

    How are you?

    I am planning on consolidating 3 servers into a Server 2008 - Hyper-V box.

Two are SBS 2003 and the other one is 2000 server.

Did anyone try this yet? I am particulary interested in getting the 2000 box virtualised. I wonder if I can go straight to Hyper-V or if I have to make it work with VMWare then convert it again.

I would like to know if there's something coming out from StorageCraft specificaly for Hyper-V.

Any info on this will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Jose.

You can migrate those into Hyper-V VMs.  You should install ShadowProtect on each machine that you wish to migrate before you capture the image of the OS volume that is to be migrated.  Then, during the restore to the VM's disk, make sure you check the Hardware Independent Restore (HIR) checkbox in the restore wizard.

HIR functionality in the ShadowProtect Desktop/Server editions will only function against volumes on which ShadowProtect is actually installed, which is why I say you must install ShadowProtect on those source OS volumes BEFORE you image them.  HIR functionality in ShadowProtect IT Edition does not have this limitation.

The only caveate you need to keep in mind when restoring to a Hyper-V VM is that you have to use the emulated network adapter within Hyper-V for backwards compatibility.  The ShadowProtect recovery environment doesn't have the drivers necessary for the Hyper-V virtual NIC.  Use the emulated NIC and you'll be fine - you'll be able to see your network and restore your images from a network share into the VM.
