    ImageManager and drive mappings to NAS device

    I have a client that has a Windows 2003 server and 10 workstations (they purchased Server + 10 workstation bundle some time ago) all doing StorageProtect backups to a 2Tb Lacie NAS box.  Everything is working fine with the backups.

    I want to configure ImanagerManager on the 2003 server to collapse the backups but when I try to create a new policy ImageManager doesn't see that a drive is mapped to the Lacie NAS box pointing to where the backups are stored.  Only "local" drives seem show up in the list that I can pick from but by definition a NAS device will show up as a remote share.  Is there some "hidden" workaround for this?

    The information on the product clearly states "Save backup images to USB, Firewire, NAS, SAN or any network location." which seems to work.  I've even restored from this NAS device to one of the workstations and that works as well.  The problem is that ImageManager seems to be "crippled" such that it doesn't want to work with the NAS device.

    Interesting side note:  I can map a drive to a remote WebDAV server using NetDrive (www.netdrive.net) and surprisingly that drive shows up in the list that ImanageManager will work against!  It just refuses to work with mapped drives on the local network.  The mapped drive that NetDrive provides is clearly not a local drive, but it appears it will work just fine.

    Thanks in advance for your assistance.

    Re: ImageManager and drive mappings to NAS device

    The ImageManager service by default runs under the Local System account and cannot access mapped drives which use the credentials of the logged on user.  For ImageManager to be able to access a NAS, you must change the Log On account for the service to have an account and password that can access the NAS.  Then in the ImageManager UI type the UNC path for the NAS since the browse button will only show local paths as you mentioned.

    ShadowProtect and ImageManger do not support mapped drives. You need to use a direct UNC path:
    //servername/foldername/

    Make sure that ImageManager has the correct LogOn credentials to access the UNC destination
    (Run->Service.msc: ImageManager->Properties->LogOn credentials)

    Any destination (UNC) path configured in ShadowProtect cannot be accessed by ImageManager - they need to be configured in both.

    If you have a firewall on the client or server, make sure they don't block the port used by the ImageManager (56765)
