    Shadown Protect Server 3.1 and x64 Win2k3

    Hi Guys

I'm brand new to Shadow Protect and in general like what I see. I've been given a project for some new x64 servers (one will be an exchange 2007 server). We've got licenses for the servers, but while I'm still configuring, I haven't activated them yet.

I haven't been able to find much about shadow protects x64 support, except for a post from Nate which seemed to suggest that its not 100%. I've installed it and done a backup and noticed that I can't mount an image (error: The mount driver is not currently installed). Given that drivers are where most 32 bit apps have problems, I'm guessing this is one of those situations.

Is this right? If so, is there a resolution, or a timeframe for one? Also if its not isolated to my servers, is there somewhere on the product pages that mentions that x64 support is limited, so I can let my sales people know?

     Cheers

     Robert

I'm sorry, but ShadowProtect does not currently support x64 Windows platforms.

x64 support is a very high priority for us, and is slated for the 3.2 release, but I do not yet know the date of the 3.2 release.

Ok. Is it actually mentioned anywhere on the site? If not, perhaps it should be?

    Cheers

Can you chase it up with your sales/marketing people, or do you have a contact I can talk to? I wouldn't want others to make the same conclusion that we have.

As it stands, I've got to work out whether or not we are going to request a refund. I can't halt new servers for a couple of months because they have no backup, even if storage craft is a good solution. I'm also a bit surprised that there isn't support given how long 64 bit windows has been around. We can't be the only ones selling exchange 2007 or servers with more than 4GB of RAM. Ok, covered my need to vent on this... I'm actually going to talk to the local Storagecraft people and see what can be done.

    Cheers

Our current objective is to have this feature finished and released by the end of December.  This isn't a proclamation of an official date - I'm just letting you know our internal deadline.

However, if you simply want x64 mount support, then you can get it using the attached files.  Simply copy the attached sbmount.sys (an x64 version - to be used ONLY on x64 Windows platforms) to your drivers directory (windows\system32\drivers) and then run/import the attached sbmount.sys.reg file and then reboot.

Also, our practice has been to provide minor version upgrades for free, and I don't believe this is going to change, so AFAIK 3.2 will be freely available to any existing 3.x customers.

I too have just been caught out with my new NAS Storage Server which is 64bit.

I have purchased 20 versions of Shadow Protect which wont work under x64.

I too would like to know an ETA so I can backup my data.

    Regards

Well, the major hurdle for this is completed (an x64 version of stcvsm.sys) and we are beginning the process of thorough testing.  This should be about two to three weeks, during which we will also be modifying our installers and product so that the x64 drivers (stcvsm.sys and sbmount.sys) will be used on x64 platforms rather than the x86 versions.  My best guess at this point is that we'll be able to release this to customers in roughly one month.

    Nate

I agree with Morrie, this is a critical issue with me also. I have purchased 10 licences and find that they do not work with 64 bit and now even worse I cannot even use NT backup as VSS fails. I note a couple of posts back you porvided the 64 bit sbmount.sys file, any chance you can post the "untested" stcvsm.sys file as well. I am happy to act as a BETA for you. It may solve my problem and save my job.

Well, right now stcvsm.sys is in alpha, and is not ready for use by anyone outside of STC.  I do like the idea of releasing it for general public testing by any interested party when it goes beta.  I'll keep you posted.

    Nate,

We are currently working with Zenith InfoTech and I know they are using StorageCraft with their Backup solution. I have several clients who are desperately waiting for the 64 bit release. Is there anything I can do in the mean time to at least get some of these servers backed up. I'm willing to pay for a support call if need be.

     Thanks in advance,

     Mike

It's done, in test, and so far testing is going very well (no issues that I know of).  This means that the x64 release is very near now, most likely just a couple of weeks.  Can you wait that long?
