Second that! I'ts the one feature i'm anxiously waiting for.
having to use GParted every time to resize those partitions before imaging and restoring is starting to get on my nerves. Not to mention the disaster recovery scenarios where you don't have the luxury of being able to resize first and just have to drop down on my knees in the server room and pray that the drive isn't 1MB smaller than the prevoious one.

I'd vote x64 for 3.2, shrink for 3.3 and Thinstalled IT Edition for 3.4.

I also vote for this. My managers have been shafting me left and right about not being able to restore to smaller or the same size partitions. Please if you are able to give a time frame or if it's in any of the new update? Any help would be great.

    Re: Destination partition is smaller

I have just purchased the IT Edition, and was dissapointed that this feature was NOT already in it. It has many features that were discussed with me, but I obviously didnt ask if this feature was in it as I thought this would be a no brainer. Now it seems that my money is wasted, and I will have to go back to Acronis or Ghost. You live and learn, and waste money...............

I used to be indecisive once, now I'm not sure!!!!!!

    Nate:
ShadowProtect currently doesn't support restoration to volumes which are smaller in size than the image's source volume size.  This is a feature which has been partially implemented but other new features keep on preempting it and so it just never seems to get finished.  :(

In my opinion this is a very important feature. We are just testing the IT Edition at the moment at one of our customers and at this point we have to stop and end the test. We wanted to try to migrate some older Servers to a new Intel Blade Center. I never thought about looking for this feature because it's a basic in almost evry other product we used. So I was very surprised no to find any 'resize' button at the restore. In the scenario we wanted to test the software it's not unusual to migrate old servers with great partitions to smaler systems because there will also be a storage migration to a SAN in the second step when the new Hardware is up an running. Doing a resize at the original running production system as mentioned somewhere else is not a solution for us. I hope this feature will come as soon as posible. The rest we could test looked very good. The hardware detection was quiet impressive, also the speed of the imaging. This has been a good work! Sad that we could not do the final step to see if evrything would work after the restore...

We come across this problem all the time and it is very frustrating.  Is there a timeline when this feature will be implemented?

By the way - we were surprised that backing up 64bit servers was just implemented in version 3.2.  We have been using version 3.1.0.4 to backup/restore Citrix 64bit servers without problems.

Please please PLEASE make this a priority. Resizing is SO important to our company. I have used ghost since the 90's and have been resizing partitions since the 90's. I dont think any other feature is more important than this. It has already burned us 2 times in a production environment. It has also made our backup disaster recovery plans a pain because we can not natively resize our restore to fit into vmware server vm's.

This has my 200% vote to get done ASAP.

Just keep in mind this thread is 6 months old now and still absolutely no timeframe from StorageCraft to implement this. You can also look back in the forums much earlier and find similar requests........yawn.

I was told the feature was imminent in early 2007......

    Yea come on Storagecraft.

We pay NZ$3500 for our 12 month IT edition and don't even get a feature that you can get in some free products!

+1 for this feature. I dig the product but find the whole disk thing a product gap.

StorageCraft what is your timeframe on this being implemented?

I was the second person to post on this thread with much support since and we still have not heard anything as yet.

It literally feels like we are speaking to a brick wall.

Please respond to this post and update us all.

This definitely gets my vote!  This limitation has bit us a few times.  We are just in the demo phase of this product and have been Ghost users for a long time.  Ghost has been able to do this for a long time.

Shadow Protect has a lot of other features that blow Ghost out of the water so we would love to see Shadow Protect get rid of this limitation.

Have a look into this thread talking about the upcoming shrink functionality in version 3.3.

    Nate,

Can you confirm that the "shrink" feature (from this post) will indeed allow us to clone to a smaller partition? If you reply "yes" then Shadowprotect just went up 1000% in value for our company.

Yes, that's the very purpose of the shrink feature. There are some limitations to the shrink feature, and it will be enhanced over time, however in its current form it will satisfy the majority of cases where users need to restore to a smaller partition.  I'll provide full details at release time.
