    Destination partition is smaller

I've backed up the C: drive on a server to a image.  The original C: partition is 33GB.  The data inside the partition is only 9GB.  The backed up imaged file is only 5GB.  I attempted to restore the image to server with only 30GB hard disk.  The process failed and complian the destination partition has not enough space to restore the volume.  What can I do to solve this problem?  Can IT edition resize the partition on the fly when it is being restored just like Symantec Ghost???

ShadowProtect currently doesn't support restoration to volumes which are smaller in size than the image's source volume size.  This is a feature which has been partially implemented but other new features keep on preempting it and so it just never seems to get finished.  :(

    Re: Destination partition is smaller

Is there any way the community could perhaps "vote" on the single most important issue with ShadowProtect? I personally consider the ability to restore to a smaller partition as absolutely critical. This "feature" has been in the works ever since we purchased our original IT Edition licenses a year ago and we are repeatedly told it's "coming". I only made the decision to proceed without this feature on the basis it would be included in the next release at the time, which was the buzz from our distributor and in these forums.......

HIR was worth the wait but restoring to smaller partitions is at least as important.

Nate, could you enlighten us all as to which "new features" are taking priority over this?????????? I just cannot think of one that would qualify.

There are a few, of which the only one I am free to mention is x64 support (now in alpha stage - code complete and being tested internally).

    Re: Destination partition is smaller

Well i place my vote that the feature for the ability to restore to a smaller partion gets developed as in any environment the ability to be able to restore onto any available piece of hardware in a system critical situation is the only way to ensure that the ShadowProtect restore function works effectively.

That was the way the software was pitched to us when we were considering its purchase.

Well, this is the first time I've heard a request for this feature.   Oh... wait.  Maybe not.  ;)

Thanks AAPC.  Your vote is duly noted.

I will vote for this feature as well!

This has p*ssed me off sooo many times I have almost changed to another product.

Being able to restore an image to a smaller partition/drive is something I need almost every day.

Even changing between hard drives from the same manufacturer, of the same size but different versions can be a no go because of this restriction with ShadowProtect. e.g. I had a PC with a 40GB Seagate 7200.5 that had bad sectors - Made an image and replaced hard drive with a 40GB Seagate 7200.6 but because the 7200.6 was slightly smaller (Even though Seagate calls them both 40GB) I could not restore the image!

Understood.  We definitely don't want to cause any urinary issues with our users so we will do our best on this.  It came up yesterday in fact (again) and I'll bring it up tomorrow.  It will happen, it's just a matter of when.

    Hi Nate,

Please also note my vote for this feature to be implemented. I keep running into this issue in the course of my on-site work. As far as I'm concerned this is the ONLY feature The Shadow misses out on!

Its dissapointing because ATI and Ghost support this feature.

Yep, noted.  It's very present in our minds, believe me, and we are going to release a solution for this.

I would also like to say this is the single highest priority to us. Since nearly every other product on the market supports this feature, it is a real deficit to us.

yep, this gets my vote too.

It is a sticky point hampering our purchasing decision.
