    NAS and ImageManager

    Hello All,

With ShadowProtect I can get our test NAS Boxes working fine but ImageManager is having issues. Was wondering if anyone else has had any success or failure with a particular NAS box?

The units I have tested so far without much success are:

     DLINK DNS-323

    BUFFALO LinkStation LS-GL

    Thanks,

    Simon

I'm sorry, but without a description of the problem(s) that you are experiencing there is no way that we can help to resolve them. What, exactly, is going wrong? I'm going to make a guess that you have configured ImageManager to manage images on your NAS and that it doesn't appear to be doing anything. In such a case, you need to make sure that the service account under which the ImageManager.exe NT service runs needs to have EXACTLY the same name and password as the NAS account which has access to the relevant share on the NAS. The NT Service account under which the ImageManager.exe service runs also needs to be an account which is local to the machine on which ImageManager.exe is installed, and it needs to belong to the local Administrators group on that machine.

    Re: NAS and ImageManager

     Hello Nate,

Thanks for the reply. I was getting issues and had an email exchange with Kevin which resulted in me sending log files from  Shadowprotect Server and ImageManager. The  reply was  that  ImageManager seemed to work best on local drives but we have tried with quality NAS drives and would love to get these working. The setup is on a SBS 2003 box and any advice on getting this working would be great hence trying to find out if anyone else had success and with what units.

This is currently working locally at the moment but I will change back to the Buffalo NAS drive (no security used) now.

Would you require me to send the logs again?

Other than this issue that I am sure will get sorted the software is great and when it is resolved will be looking to offer a DR solution to our customers using using your technology.

    Thanks,

    Simon

Did you follow my previous instructions? If so, what, exactly, are the results?

    Re: NAS and ImageManager

     Hi Nate,

The following will hopefully help out.

Server Type:        Small Business Server 2003
Service Settings:     ImageManager.exe    using Domain Admin Account
    NAS Security:        None used

    Settings used for ImageManager:

    \\172.17.1.5\backup
Time of day to begin collapse:   00:00:00
    Minutes between collapse:   60
Number of days to keep intra-day incrementals:  1

I have worked out that if the ImageManger.exe Service is stopped and then started again it will process the incremental files and make daily files only once. The service will need to be restarted to do any more processing.

Let me know if you need any other information?

    Thanks,

    Re: NAS and ImageManager

From your description, it sounds to me like the ImageManager.exe NT Service is not being notified when files are added to the directory which it is monitoring.  This can happen if there is a bug in the SMB/CIFS implementation on the NAS device.  Please check to see if there are any software/firmware upgrade options for your NAS device, specifically related to SMB (Samba is the SMB implementation on Linux) and CIFS.

    Re: NAS and ImageManager

     Hello Nate,

Thanks for the reply. This is happening on two NAS boxes we have. They are a Buffalo Linkstation Pro and Dlink DNS-323, they both have latest firmware as this is the first thing we do with any kit straight out the box.

Well I have created a scheduled task which stops and starts the service and this is working OK, but I would love to get this working.

One thing I did try and find out was what other people are using and with what success. Do you know of any NAS boxes that have worked? I am not looking for a guarantee but at least some guidance?

Also would it be usefull to get some logs over to you??

    Thanks,

    Simon

Yes, please zip up and send us the ImageManager log files.  I sent an email to you with address/instructions.

    Re: NAS and ImageManager

The email which I sent to your onit address bounced.  You'll therefore have to open an official support incident and send the zipped copy of your ImageManager logs through that channel.  It'll help if you refer to this thread in your support submission.
