    Vista: Blue Curtain of Death

Using the recovery disk, "Legacy" works fine, but "Vista" results in a very pretty blue screen that looks like curtains. I have to reboot to get out of it. I have Windows XP. Any ideas?

Is there any information on the BSOD that you could post?  The #1 cause of a BSOD of the Vista based recovery environment is memory.  I believe it needs a minimum of about 340MB of RAM to work.  If you have less, the result is usually a BSOD.

I have 1 gig of RAM. Anything other info that would help?

What are the details (bug check code and four parameter values) of the blue screen?

I'm glad the Legacy environment works for you.  There do seem to be advantages to shipping two flavors of the recovery environment.  :)

Re: Vista: Blue Curtain of Death/ALSO: HIR?

    Nate,

I decided to give Vista another try to be able to answer your questions. It worked--thanks to my patience! While I didn't watch the clock, I'll bet it took 5-10 mins. It sat at the "curtains" stage for a LONG time; then each initializing/loading process took a long time, as well. But it did what it's supposed to do.

I DID go ahead and activate SP3. Since I had already downloaded the ISO trial version (the more complete one) before I purchased, can I assume HIR works, now that' I've activated? I wasn't sure, since I made the disk a week or so before I activated. If HIR shows up as a hotlink on the screen, can I assume it works?

Re: Vista: Blue Curtain of Death/ALSO: HIR?

Ah, I'm glad you mentioned that "slow boot" recovery environment issue.  That is very likely caused by your BIOS configuration.  If you do not actually have a physical floppy drive installed in your machine, and if in your BIOS setup any of the floppy devices are enabled, then you will likely experience a very slow boot time when you boot the Recommended environment.  To resolve this issue, simply disable all floppy drives in your BIOS setup.

Yes, HIR for Desktop/Server Editions will work (with your CD) when you restore an image file that contains a backup of a volume on which ShadowProtect Desktop or Server Edition is installed.

Re: Vista version slow; floppy drive the problem?

    Nate,

I DO have a floppy drive installed, and the BIOS IS set to boot from the floppy (last in line, though). Does that sound like a problem related to the slowness, or is it a problem only if there is NO floppy drive in the machine?

Re: Vista version slow; floppy drive the problem?

I've only seen the slow-boot issue when there is no physical floppy drive installed and at least one floppy drive is enabled in the BIOS.  Perhaps your BIOS has settings for enabling two floppy drives and you only have one physical floppy.  ?  If so, make sure that you only have as many floppies enabled in the BIOS for which you actually have installed physical drives.

Thanks Nate, you solved my slow recovery boot problem.

Booting speed got much better, after I disabled all floppy drives.
