    Western Digital MyWorldBook and mionet

Has anyone had any luck using Western Digital's MyWorldBook, which is accessed using mionet?  The backup software that  comes with it is EMC Retrospect.  I had already read that I need to remove all traces of Acronis True Image (which explained why my machine wouldn't boot yesterday.)  I just wanted to know if it will work and if I need to remove Retrospect or not.  Tia.

Retrospect will likely have problems with True Image as Retrospect (like many backup products) uses a flavor of StorageCraft's snapshot device driver.  I recommend full uninstall of True Image including manual uninstall of True Image's snapman.sys if it is not removed by the True Image uninstaller.  Search this forum for "snapman.sys" for detailed manual uninstall instructions.

I was already planning on a full uninstall of True Image because of a previous posting you made.  It (True Image) sounds very unfriendly to other backup programs.  I wanted to know if Retrospect will cause problems with ShadowProtect Desktop.  I also wanted to know if ShadowProtect Desktop will work with MyWorldBook which is accessed over the network using mionet.  Thanks in advance.

I don't believe that Retrospect will have any problems with ShadowProtect.  I'm not familiar with mionet so I can't comment on it.

African Greys are amazing.  There was one in an aviary in down town SLC that had an incredible (and very colorful) vocabulary.  That parrot would make its Pirate owner blush.  Arrr!

I use ShadoDesktop to backup to a MyBookWorld II 2TB drive, you don't need mionet if you are using it in a local network. I assigned a Static IP address to it and use it as a network share. works great. and is still private...

Re: Western Digital MyWorldBook and mionet

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you.  I wasn't on my machine until Sunday.  I uninstalled Acronis using Your Uninstaller and it seemed to have removed all traces.  I installed tried to "Manage" MyWorldbook to give it a Static IP address, but it insists that it isn't local and only a local drive can be managed.  Could you let me know how you accomplished that?  I must be overlooking something.  Anyway, I decided to continue with what you said assuming that I could fix that later.  I mapped a drive to the MyWorldBook drive, and installed ShadowDesktop.  I rebooted at the end of the installation as it required, and my machine went into a cycle where it would reboot and wouldn't start up into XP until I selected the "last known good" option.  Then ShadowProtect Desktop wouldn't work because a driver it uses wasn't installed.  I had other work to accomplish, so that's where I am now.  Any suggestions on how to fix either of the 2 problems?  I might repost the rebooting problem if I don't get a response since the title here doesn't make that apparent.  I am also going to hunt for other entries that might have fixed that problem.  Anyway, Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Hi, If your "Mybookworld" is connected to your local lan, then just open a browser window and type 'mybookworld' (without quotes) that should open the Shared Storage Manager window on the book. then you can click on the General Setup tab, login and then you can set up the nework,  be sure to set the workgroup to whatever you have your local network set to,,  default is WorkGroup...see if this helps

Re: Western Digital MyWorldBook and mionet

Great!  Thanks for the info.  I don't know why the software that Western Digital supplied (mionet) doesn't recognize that the drive is local.  Although I did notice that it seems to access it by going out to the internet at mionet and back instead of a local address.  I don't remember the address it used, but it was available though a local address as well.  I am going to set it up that way and maybe disable mionet since I really don't want to send my data out of my local network in the first place or I would have purchased a remote backup service. As for my other problem, I found some other posts that indicate it might be Data Execution Prevention.  So I will try all of this when i get a chance to get back on my home machine.  (Remodeling takes up time, doesn't it.)  Again thanks for the assistance, I really appreciate it and will post back the results when i have tried it.

It sounds like "Your Uninstaller" didn't actually remove the snapman.sys acronis driver.  This driver will cause blue screens when it is installed along-side ShadowProtect.  Follow the instructions in this post to remove snapman.sys manually.  Then reinstall ShadowProtect.

Re: Western Digital MyWorldBook and mionet

Thanks for replying.  I did a cursory check (I checked the "UpperFilters" values on the first 2 steps, and snapman wasn't there so I assumed that it was removed) using your procedure from another post.  (Yeah, yeah I know what assuming gets me.  Apparently blue screen reboots...)  I will go through your procedure entirely to ensure snapman.sys is completely eliminated.  Then I will uninstall and reinstall ShadowProtect.  I am pretty sure that it installed properly in the first place, but I am not sure what going to "Last Known Good" undid from that installation and I want to give ShadowProtect every chance while I'm evaluating it for purchase.

Re: Western Digital MyWorldBook and mionet

When you rolled back to the "last known good" configuration this likely caused the following effects on ShadowProtect components:

-removed the stcvsm.sys snapshot driver's service key

-removed the sbmount.sys mount driver's service key

    -removed the ShadowProtectSvc.exe service key

    -removed the vsnapvss.exe service key

I'm not sure what will happen when you uninstall ShadowProtect after making such hack'n'slash changes.  It may not be pretty.

Would you advise me to just reinstall? Does ShadowProtect have a "repair" option when going to "add/remove programs"?

Re: Western Digital MyWorldBook and mionet

I'm actually not sure.  I've never rolled back to last known good config to see how the installer behaves afterwards.  I believe the installer does have a repair option, so try that first.  If it doesn't work, then try a full uninstall followed by a full install.

That seems like a good plan.  I'll try that and let you know the results when I have.  I probably won't have a chance to get to it until this weekend, though.

Re: Western Digital MyWorldBook and mionet

MyWorldBook is on my local LAN, but when I type mybookworld in the Firefox address bar, it converts it to http://myworldbook and I end up with a blank window.  When I try it in ie7 it thinks I want to search on the term and searches on the term.  Did I misunderstand what you were saying?
