I went through your procedure and there was no trace of snapman in the  registry, but it still existed in system32\drivers.  After deleting it, I rebooted and then did a repair on the ShadowProtect installation.  When I rebooted, it gets as far as accessing disks and I get a bluescreen for an instant and then it reboots.  So I selected "safe mode" and uninstalled.  Then I rebooted and reinstalled ShadowProtect Desktop from scratch.  When I rebooted I got the same results.  There must be some other incompatible software that is on my system other than Acronis.  Unless someone has an idea what else I can try I am going to have to give up on ShadowProtect Desktop.  I had such high hopes after reading PC Magazines review and really wanted to try it.

I'm really sorry to hear of your problems installing ShadowProtect, I've had it for less than a month and love it, (have also sold it to two of my clients), if you get the install problems solved you will be sold. I have never seen a product that works so well and simple for backup, i have restored several times to test once to a completely different hardware pc (xp to a DELL 2550 Perc 3-di raid.)  worked flawlessly,  as soon as I can afford it, I will have it on all my pc's..

I haven't quite given up yet.  I'm going to change the "Startup and Recovery" setting to not automatically restart and see if I can make sense of the blue screen or at least get something useful to send to support.  They may not have it set up to submit a help request for someone without a serial number though.  I'm going to try anyway once I have something to send.

I don't understand what you're trying to do in IE7.

Re: Western Digital MyWorldBook and mionet

    Sorry Nate,

The bit about Firefox and ie7 are to manage the Western Digital Disk since I want it to have a fixed ip address and not one set by DHCP.

The problem I am having with ShadowProtect is unrelated (I believe) and appears to be a driver incompatibility of some sort that causes a blue screen followed by a restart when starting WinXP.  I can't get past this so far without either selecting "last known good" which seems to remove the drivers ShadowProtect Desktop needs, or by selecting "safe mode".  Currently ShadowProtect is uninstalled.  I am going to change the setting that I believe tells XP to reboot on such an error so I can write down the blue screen information.  It isn't logged because Event Viewer isn't running yet.

Re: Western Digital MyWorldBook and mionet

The blue screen is almost certainly caused by an interop issue between snapman.sys (from Acronis) and our stcvsm.sys.  If you ever had a version of True Image or Disk Director installed, then it's very likely that snapman.sys is still on your system (their uninstallers didn't remove snapman.sys).  I believe this issue (this BSOD) has been fixed in the very latest version of snapman.sys, but I am still awaiting confirmation of this.  Anyway, for more information on how you can manually remove snapman.sys from your system, see this post

Re: Western Digital MyWorldBook and mionet

Nate, I did this as you suggested in an earlier post this thread. While snapman.sys was indeed on my system, it was in none of the registry keys in your excellent instructions. After deleting it per your instructions, I rebooted, attempted a repair install, rebooted and got a blue screen. I booted into safe mode, uninstalled ShadowProtect Desktop, rebooted. Then I installed ShadowProtect Desktop again and rebooted. The result was another bluescreen, with snapman.sys not on the system. When I get a chance, I am going to try to write down the results of the bluescreen to post as I posted previously.

Better yet, zip up and send us your minidump file (usually found in the C:\windows\minidump directory).  Send it to support 'aht' storagecraft 'doht' com.  Send us a dump that occurred at a time when snapman.sys was not present on your machine.

OK. I will as soon as I can get on that machine. (It's my personal machine @ home & I'm not on it much during the week right now.) I really appreciate your help in working this out!

Re: Western Digital MyWorldBook and mionet

I just tried it on several pc's.  i used mybookworld in the address bar on ie6, and ie7 .both worked, then i tried  http://mybookworld/  and that also worked. I don't understand why your browser is converting to a different spelling. strange.

Re: Western Digital MyWorldBook and mionet

Sorry, I mistyped.  It went to http://mybookworld/ and not http://myworldbook except when I tried typing myworldbook hoping it would work.  That only happened in Firefox though.  When I typed mybookworld in the ie7 address bar it seemed to think I was trying to search on the word instead of trying to connect.  I have a question, is there a folder with software that is supposed to be on the drive?  Firefox is connecting, it is just showing a blank page, but not a 404 error, which is what I would expect if it wasn't finding anything.  so Firefox is seeing the address available, but nothing there to display.  I even enabled scripts for the site in NoScript, shut down Firefox, cleared the cache on shutdown and restarted Firefox before typing the address again.  Still a blank page.  I sent a request for help from Western Digital yesterday, but haven't heard back yet.  I am tempted to hook the drive directly to my PCs network cable and see it that works, but it is supposed to work as it is installed now.  So I really want it fixed.  Thanks for your help fawiley, if you think of anything let me know.

Another idea,  open ie7 Tools , internet options. and clear all temp files and history if you can. then try again,  it could be hitting a stored link in memory, which would explain the search...

I'll try that as soon as I can, which may not be until the weekend.  I'll let you know what the results are either way.  Thanks for the help!  I think I might try actually disabling some of the plugins in Firefox (such as NoScript) that might be interfering as well.  However, I have seen some web apps that don't work properly or sometimes at all in Firefox.  So I am counting in ie7 to work in the end.

Re: Western Digital MyWorldBook and mionet

I've tried to get a minidump file, but the stop error is apparently being generated too early in XP startup.  I have un-installed and re-installed ShadowProtect Desktop 3.1 several times and have the same stop error each time after reboot following re-installation.  I had to set XP to not automatically reboot to even see the error.  The bluescreen info is as follows:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent
    damage to your computer.

    UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen,
restart your computer.  If this screen appears again, follow
    these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.
If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer
for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware
or software.  Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.
If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart
your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then
    select Safe Mode.

    Technical information:

    *** STOP: 0x000000ED (0X8B14F420, 0XC000014F, 0X00000000, 0X00000000)

I have run a utility called "DriverView" to view all of the drivers loaded and running.  I have saved the resulting information, and can send it if you want.  Btw, snapman.sys is not listed and I can find no trace of it in my system.

Re: Western Digital MyWorldBook and mionet

    Gentlemen,

Sorry to interrupt. I've been owning a My World Book 2To since early March this year, and am desperately looking for knowledgeable help.

I am myself NO computer expert, and you guys sound like the right people...

The problem appears with Retrospect backups, but looks like the root cause is rather the way Mionet manages access to the drive.

Recently, my trial version of Mionet Premium expired. I didn't subsribe to have it prolonged. Since then my disk appears with a different IP address. I had previously 192.168.1.20 and now I have 192.168.1.21. Previously, I had to reinstall Mionet following some problems when I setup the drive. Initially I had 192.168.1.23.

Retrospect seems to keep trace of both the former addresses and the new one: When I configure the backup, I see three different drives at the three different addresses, although only the one with 192.168.1.21 has a long name with this intricate number that Mionet has created.

Now, when I try to run a backup on folders that I had already backed up a few times, Retrospect tells me that the drive has not enough disk space (I checked and have 700+ Gb left), and doesn't do the incremental backup.

Last time, when I had to reinstall Mionet, I had to redo completely my backups, which took me 5 full days given the shity transfer rate.

I wouldn't like to do that again, and would greatly appreciate if anyone of you could help me sort this out the right way. I guess it has something to do with assigning a fix IP to my drive, but even this I wouldn't know how to do...

In advance, many thanks for your support.
