[SOLVED] Stop 0x000000ED - HIR Restore of Windows XP onto a Dell Optiplex 745

    All,

I have been very successful using our XP Pro image on all our machines - Except a certain model: A Dell Optiplex 745.

It claims to use a SATA drive yet has no SATA driver on the DELL website. The IT edition boot disk does see the drive without doing any special f6 options when booting. Yet I get a STOP 0x000000ED - UMOUNTABLE_BOOT_DEVICE whenever it attempts to boot.

I chose the usual restore options of hidden track, mbr, etc.

Any suggestions? This smells like a controller issue to me.

Have you gotten onto the Microsoft support page to look up the error I've attached the link below if you haven't. I often find that these are the most useful when I get STOP 0x0... Errors.

     http://support.microsoft.com/kb/297185

Anyway it looks like it could be one of three things, but the first thing I would do is run a Chkdsk on the drive and check for errors. The rest of the information you might be interested in is on the microsoft support page or just type in 0x000000ED into a search engine.

During the HIR process were you prompted for any drivers?  If so, how did you respond to the prompt(s)?

@JWT: The disk should be fine. I hav ebeen using this PC to do some testing with and all previous images worked fine. I will still try the chkdsk utility although in my heart of hearts I know it is not the problem.

@Nate: Yes I t did prompt for a driver while performing the endgame HIR: It was asking for Broadcom drivers. I told it NOT to insatll (Ignore I think).

I got that same error when using another imaging program when trying to restore a known good image to a new Dell.  I had to go into the BIOS and change the controller setting from ACH (I think, it's been a couple of months) to SATA.
