    shadowprotect and vista

installed shadowprotect on 32bit vista ultimate.  set up the backups and incrementals.  manually ran full mirror of hard drives and everything worked great.  checked this morning to see if the backup i had set ran and it had not.  now i can't get shadowprotect to launch.  the shadowprotect banner pops up and shows connecting but it never launches.  your product has worked perfectly on my two xp machines.

It sounds like the ShadowProtect Service may be stuck for some reason, or not starting properly.  Restart your computer and then go to your start menu and run 'services.msc'.  Look through the list of services for 'ShadowProtect Service' and see what its status is.  It should be 'Started'.  Try running ShadowProtect again and see if it will connect.  If not, it may help to unregister and re-register the service.  One simple way to do this is to uninstall, restart, and then reinstall ShadowProtect.

This could also be Vista's DEP security blocking our service from running.  Go to the start menu and right-click on Computer and select Properties.  Select Advances system settings from the task list on the left.  Click the Settings button for Performance and go to the Data Execution Prevention tab.  Tell it to turn on DEP for all programs and setting except those you select, then add "C:\Program Files\StorageCraft\ShadowProtect\ShadowProtectSvc.exe" as an exception.  Restart your computer and try to run ShadowProtect again.  Let us know if none of this helps.

Why must ShadowProtect be an exception to the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) policy – i.e., why must the application have the ability to execute code stored in data pages?

Is the task of making ShadowProtect “DEP compliant” on the schedule of forthcoming product enhancements?

    Thank you.

Yes, we are working on this issue.  It doesn't seem to be a universal problem (I have a Vista machine here with DEP enabled with no exceptions, and everything works fine), but it is common enough that we are working on a solution.

    Can I second that concern?

I raised a support query when I purchased in January because the service crashes upon installation (i.e. with -install or via the MSI).

Was told to turn off DEP at that time - I am somewhat concerned that almost 6 months later your service is still behaving illegally wrt memory accesses.

Please provide some indication of the likely timeframes for this?

ps: DEP is a broad-brush based approach for memory accesses, so I would expect you will never replicate the problem consistently. That said, it should not be hard to locate this kind of issue, especially given the long timeframe...

    Re: shadowprotect and vista

I'm having an issue similar to what the original poster described. I get the following error, and if I try to run SP after that I see the "Connecting..." issue.

For the last week or so I've seen Vista "crash" notifications for StorageProtect. It appears at odd times, not during a backup, just out of the blue, so I'm not sure what triggers it. Here's the description from the error box:

      Problem signature:
      Problem Event Name:    APPCRASH
      Application Name:    svchost.exe_swprv
      Application Version:    6.0.6001.18000
      Application Timestamp:    47918b89
      Fault Module Name:    swprv.dll
      Fault Module Version:    6.0.6001.18000
      Fault Module Timestamp:    4791a765
      Exception Code:    c0000005
      Exception Offset:    00020112
      OS Version:    6.0.6001.2.1.0.768.3

Usually, rebooting will get SP going again. This is a new problem. SP was working fine for the past several months. After I see this error, if I don't reboot, I see "Connecting..." forever when I start the SP Desktop.

Do I need the DEP fix? Or is this something else?

    Re: shadowprotect and vista

I'm not sure about the appcrash above, but what you describe sounds a lot like the DEP issue, so yes, you might want to except the Service in your DEP settings.  The DEP problem has been fixed for version 3.3, which will be released very soon.
