Restore to Virtual PC 2007 - Shared Folders

I am attempting to use the ShadowProtect recovery CD and MS Virtual PC 2007 to restore a backup image.  I understand that MS Virtual PC 2007 does not support a USB device, so I have copied the backup image to the host PC's local drive.  However, I can't figure out how to create a Shared Folder in Virtual PC so that the ShadowProtect Recovery Environment can then find the image for restoring.

I see that it is necessary in Virtual PC to install the Virtual Machine Additions, which then give the ability to create shared folders.  However, I can't install the Virtual Machine Additions until the OS has been restored (?).

     Any ideas?  Thanks.  Charlie

Shared folders doesn't work under StorageCraft's recovery environment.  You therefore need to use a mapped drive.  You need to create a share on your host and then map to it from within the recovery environment using the Network Configuration utility.

Thanks, Scott.  For some reason, I am getting an "unable to connect to ..." message when attempting to map the drive using the Network Configuration utility.  I will keep trying.

Make sure you have a valid IP Address.  It shouldn't start with 169.xxx.xxx.xxx.

If it is valid, try pinging both address, the host and the hosted VM.

Make sure the firewall is turned off for the host network adapter.

     Scott:

Thanks again for the info.  I am not able to ping the IP address on the VM (which is 169.254...).  I tried manually assigning an IP address, but still no luck.  I will continue to work on it when I get some time.  I am not a network guy, so the IP and connection issues are a challenge.

    Charlie,

You didn't say what your system specs are.  Is it attached to a network with a DHCP server (a server or router that assigns IP addresses)?  If not you will have to assign the IP address in the same subnet as the host and it cannot be one that is already used in the network.  For example, if the host is 192.168.1.10 you could assign 192.168.1.11.  The IP address you mentioned (169.254...) indicates it is not getting an IP possibly because you do not have a DHCP server or there is more than one network card in your system.  Virtual PC defaults to one virtual network card, but you can add additional cards in the settings dialog.  My laptop has both a wireless and ethernet port so I add a card for each.  Make sure you start networking in the recovery environment and map the share you created on the host.  You should then be able to access the backup image.

I have does this several times.  Good luck!

Ron, my system is in a network and attached to a DHCP server.  I kept at it, and I am now able to map a drive and perform the virtual restore.  Thanks very much for your help.
