Issue of shadowprotect using shadowcopy component

Hi Guys I've been using shadowprotect on my SBS 2008 for almost half year, and it's been working great. But there's a problem regarding its using shadowcopy. Our server has two backup system, one is shadowprotect which backup to NAS. The other one is Yosomite Backup which backup to the RDX tape. Shadowprotect backup starts everynight 6pm (FULL backup everyday, takes roughtly 7 - 7.5 hours to finish) Yosomite backup starts everynight 8:30pm (Differential from Mon - Wed, FULL backup on Thu and Fri) Every Thursday and Friday, when the yosomite's FULL backup runs, a lot of data will fail to be backed up, and in the system log, SBS 2008 will generate "The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume \Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy13." The shadowcopy for SBS 2008 has been turned off, it will only be turned on while the shadowcopy's running. I have done the chkdsk /r for both C and F drive, and it solved the problem for few days, and then the log will show up again. The user in the office never had any problem of accessing the file in both drives, and none of those messages are showing up during the day. Have you guys ever had similar problem? Any help will be appreicated! Thank you

I don't know much about Yosomite, but if it is using VSS you are going to always have issues.  StorageCraft strongly recommends against having two backup products running on a box that use VSS and especially trying to run them concurrently.

Will it help if i change to different time period? which means another backup will only start when the first one finished running.

You should not be running two backup products concurrently. Changing the times so they don't overlap would probably resolve your problem; please post the results of your efforts.

Thank you SPT for the advice. Apparently, the company wants to have two backup system, and they don't want to pay for extra for the backup agent installed on another server. Nothing I can do with that. I changed the timeframe on the yosomite backup so that it doesn't conflict with shadowprotect, but the ntfs error log still showing up. I will have to schedule a chkdsk /r on the drive, and restart the server. See if it helps.

Have both backup products ever worked together on this server? If so, when did they stop, or what changed?

Yosomite shouldn't be using the ShadowCopy service when it's not backing up, can you look at the error in the event log after SP fails, and post it back here. Is it the same one you posted above?

Re: Issue of shadowprotect using shadowcopy component

There is another issue that can come into play. Sometimes one backup program will not use VSS properly or will not clear VSS properly and can cause both products to stop working even if they are not running at the same time. There are other issues such as driver conflicts that can even cause the system to become unstable simply by having the two products installed on the same system.

There are some products that we do not generally have problems with, such as Microsofts own NTBackup, but even NTBackup can at times cause problems for ShadowProtect as NTBackup does not utilize VSS the way that it should. While it is not common, it still happens enough to cause a support headache.

Thanks JWT In the yosomite backup, I am thinking of disable snapshot option, I haven't tested yet, I think this may help a bit. I will keep this post updated.

All right, tried different ways, but still couldn't make it work for two different software. Well, eventually I setup three different jobs in three different timeframe in shadowprotect, which I believe it is going to work. I will let my client know to get rid of yosomite as it's free anyway, they got nothing to lose. One more thing i would like to ask: can shadow protect run two backup jobs at the same time to same location? job 1: backup c drive differential 6:00pm (tape) job 2: backup f drive differential 6:00pm (tape)

How silly I am, I misread the option for differential. And it turns out i can't do differential backup in schedule? Need some help now~~~can anyone tell me how to do differential backup in schedule?

You can't do differential backups on continuous incremental jobs. However, on monthly/weekly jobs there is an option: "second and subsequent full backups are differentials" under advanced on the options page. As it says, after the first full backup, or base, whenever the schedule calls for a full backup, it will make a differential instead.

Thanks SPT for this post. How am I going to setup the backup job? eg. Mon - Wed (differential), Thu - Fri (full backup) Thanks

Re: Issue of shadowprotect using shadowcopy component

You will have to have two different jobs. The first a weekly schedule full backups  Monday - Wednesday with the second and subsequent full backups are incrementals option enabled. And the second, a weekly with full backups Thursday - Sunday.

After the first full backup on Monday, all the rest will be differentials. These two schedules will be completely separate, and the images won't depend on eachother in any way. You can also set a retention policy on weekly schedules, which is something you probably want to do.

Thanks a lot SPT One more thing, we've got two backup locations. One is NAS, one is tape drive. If I have already setup a full backup schedule on NAS, will this differential backup still work for my tape drive? My real question is, if the backup location is different, can the NAS still get full backup everyday, and tape drive gets full+differential? My backup schedule will be looked like this: Mon - Fri Fullbackup (start from 8:30am) -> NAS Thu - Fri Full backup (start from 8:30pm) (option ticked) -> tape drive Mon - Wed Full backup (start from 8:30) -> tape drive

You can't backup the same volume concurrently with 2 different jobs. If they are set to run at the same time concurrently one will fail. If that option is turned off, then one will be queued and will proceed after the first is finished.
