Network issues in recovery environment on NEW Lenovo T410 laptop

I am testing out ShadowProtect desktop for imaging.  Unfortunately, the second machine we tested on is a brand new Lenovo T410.  When the Win7 recovery starts up, we're unable to get networking to load.  I'm assuming the driver for the T410 is not in the distribution?  It's an Intel driver (http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-74429) - Intel 82577LM Gigabit

We tried loading it in the load drivers portion of the recovery environment, and it says it loads, but no dice trying to start networking ("Unable to install network adapters.")

     Any ideas?

    Hi

Please take a look at an earlier post that covers this:
    http://forum.storagecraft.com/Community/forums/t/2715.aspx

The KB should also have additional information regarding this.

    1. You need to load a Vista 32-bit NIC driver so that the ShadowProtect Recovery Environment can "see" the network
    2. The driver files need to be the form of *.sys and *.inf file
If the driver is avilable in a single executable, then you need to extract these files from the executable*, preferably on another PC.

*PC and device manufacturers use different packaging products, so the method to extract the drivers from a single executable driver varies. Normally you need to:

    • Open a command line tool (cmd) as administrator
    • Browse to location of executable file, e.g. C:\Temp\
    • Use the appropriate extraction option, e.g. C:\Temp\someNICdriver.exe -x
    • If you contact Lenovo, they should provide details on how to extract the drivers from any executable.

    Regards

Nice try, but no dice. The first thing I did was go to Lenovo's site and download the 64 and 32 bit Windows 7 drivers (Not knowing whether the RE is 32 or 64 bit.)  Since I'm using the Windows 7 RE, I assumed I wanted Win7 drivers.  Extracted the drivers and put them on my flash drive.  Started RE, it sees the flash drive.  Point it to the 32 bit Win7 drivers, push load, no errors (Or success messages.)  Try to start the network and no dice.

    Any other suggestions?

I would strat by trying to make sure you have a compatible NIC driver. I don't want to labor the point but.....

    From the message above:

    FTTester:
You need to load a Vista 32-bit NIC driver

    From original message I posted:

    FTTester:
you need to load the Vista 32-bit driver, rather than any DOS driver. In some cases, you might be lucky and have a Win7 driver work with Vista, many times not.

If the manufacturer of the PC/laptop does not have a Vista driver, you can check the website of the chipset manufacturer (Intel. Realtek etc.) and see if they have a suitable driver. After loading a driver, use the network tool to restart/start the network connection. Make sure that the DHCP and other settings are correct. To test the network and doublecheck that the NIC driver is loaded, you can use the command line tool (cmd) and type the normal ipconfig /all. You can start the cmd tool by using the file browser tool to navigate to the cmd.exe executable in the SP RE. There are a number of posts on how to do that if you need more information.

So I'm still lost - why do I want a Vista driver if I'm running the Win7 RE?  I'm happy to try it, just trying to understand better.

Re: Network issues in recovery environment on NEW Lenovo T410 laptop

The ShadowProtect Recovery Environment (RE) has two available boot environments:

Option 1: Based on Windows Vista 32-bit (Recommended)

    Option 2: Based on Windows 2003 32-bit

When you select the default option, the PC is booted into the the Windows Vista 32-bit environment. The result is a temporary Windows Vista 32-bit held within the RAM of your PC (called a RAM disk). That's the environment in which ShadowProtect runs. When you reboot your PC, that temporary RAM disk is removed and the PC boots off the WIndows (or Linux) you have on you hard drive(s).

Don’t know what to say – my only options are Windows 7 and 2003.  See attached “screen shot.”

This is an error, the Win7-based environment seen there is actually the same Vista environment that was in previous versions of ShadowProtect 3.5, it is simply mis-labeled.

Good deal - thanks!  Will try a Vista driver tomorrow.

You guys rock!  This most certainly worked!  Unfortunately, Windows 7 didn't like making the move from our T400 image to the T410.  It came over and booted, but had all kinds of problems with sysprep and such.  Looks like it's time to make a new image!
