Individual files. Also usb flash drives.

    Hi.

    Two questions please.

I updated last night to the current version of Desktop. Thanks for always producing a great program.

Can I go to an image from 1/20/10(example), grab a program that I own and copy/move it to my original

    from 11/09? How?

Also, I've not used flash drives before so I want to know if I have to do anything special to use one for

    images?

    Thanks.

    J.

     jrspie,

It doesn't really work that way. You could mount your full image as writeable and copy any image to it, but the full image itself doesn't get changed, what happens instead is a new incremental file is created that is based on the full and contains the file changes.

Flash drives work fine to backup to. The only issue they currently have is that they are expensive and slow for the amount of space that they contain. There are no custom settings needed to use one.

     OK.

    Thanks for the help.

I'll try that and see if it works.

Just to add to what JWT said.

If the program is a very simple, single-file executable (e.g. myprogram.exe) and contains no other dependencies, then you can move it like any other file. However, most programs have many more dependencies and rely on multiple system/registry/file settings. Even if you copy all files you think are associated with the program, it is unlikely it will work when simply copied elsewhere, regardless of whether it is in a backup image or not. There are some programs that are designed for use with PC migrations. However, these normally work with specific applications (e.g. Outlook) and, for the most part, only copy over the user/program settings, rather than the actual program.

    Regards

    FT
