    Adaptec Serial ATA RAID 1210SA

    Dear collegues,

My client wanted a bigger harddisk which was a simple request because she already uses ShadowProtect Desktop 3.1.

If there is no SATA on board, I normally use a Promise TX card (has 2 SATA connectors) and a normal SATA harddisk (160/250 or more Gb).
This card was out of stock so I ordered a Adaptec 1210SA and this one gave me the BSOD. I flashed the BIOS: same BSOD.
Just to be sure that it is this card, I installed my own Promise card and used the same harddisk and the same image: all ok!!

Is there anyone who can tell me if this Adaptec 1210SA will work together with ShadowProtect??

    If not, you are warned......

Why do you think that this is ShadowProtect who has interop issues with your new card?

Can you give more information about BSOD? When does it happen?

You have to (F6) add a driver if you want to restore an image from scratch.
After I changed the Adaptec SATA card and put in the known Promise card (with its own F6 driver) everything is ok.

The BSOD happens when you start the restored Windows.

    Resuming:

Promise card + Promise driver: Restored image works perfect
Adaptec card + Adaptec driver: Restored image gives BSOD
with the same computer, the same harddisk, the same image.

Is the BSOD code 0x7B (INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE)?

When you restore the OS image to the new drive you need to use the HIR Configuration tool to reconfigure that OS so that it will boot with your Adaptec controller.  HIR may prompt you to provide the Adaptec miniport driver (from the F6 floppy).  Just place that Adaptec driver package (.sys, .inf, etc) on a network share (and in the recovery environment map a drive letter to the share) or place the same Adaptec driver package on a USB drive and when HIR prompts for it point HIR to the USB drive.

    Hi Nate,

Thx for your reply. I used the F6, I used HIR. As I told, I did everything the same for both cards, Promise and Adaptec, Promise totally ok, Adaptec: BSOD.

I didn't mention it so far, I am a Dutch reseller of StorageCraft, every client use StorageCraft now or in the near future and I have some experience in the meantime.

Is there someone who tried the Adaptec 1210SA together with ShadowsProtect 3.1?

Re: Adaptec Serial ATA RAID 1210SA

Can you see your drives after booting the recovery environment using the F6 option to load the Adaptec drivers?  If so, then when you run HIR Configuration, use the Advanced Options dialog to add A:\ to the list of additional driver paths that HIR is to use.  HIR will then use the driver right off of your floppy.  If you successfully boot WinPE with F6 and can see the disk on the Adaptec driver then telling HIR to use the drivers on A:\ will ensure that the same exact miniport ends up on your OS volume and therefore should boot.

Re: Adaptec Serial ATA RAID 1210SA

     Hi Nate,

I am having the same problem with Adaptec Serial ATA RAID 1210SA. I have an Intel Desktop board (D875PBZ) and am using an Adaptec Serial ATA RAID 1210SA controller. I am running a simuation of a bare metal recovery with a Windows 2000 Server running as a Domain Controller (Active Directory)

In F6 option 2 boot it picks up my RAID Controller when I specify it (From Floppy) and I can see my Disks under Disk Map. Able to create partitions and  I can also see my restored files, During the restore backup (using HIR option) it completes the restore successfully but in HIR it still will not accept the new driver. It says it didn’t contain an INF file which matches the device. It than loads its default driver (Fair). I ran chkdsk /F on both partitions and during first time boot up I select Directory service restore mode. It begins to load the directory service restore mode screen, black screen with windows 2000 server at the top. It displays Windows is booting into safe mode directory services repair mode then after a few seconds it displays a BSOD and stops at the error code INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE Stop: 0x0000007B.

I tested the exact same steps with an IDE hard drive on the same pc and everything works fine. But when I use the Adaptec RAID card I get a BSOD.

I think the problem lies within HIR not being able to force the use of my driver. Is there a workaround that we can use to force it to load the driver specified? For instance in Windows you can select a driver to install a device regardless even if it windows doesn’t think it’s a match.

I am in the process of communicating with Storagecraft Australia to get the problem resolved. Hopfully they can assist me with a fix.

    Nate,

Is there a possibility that you buy this Adatec 1210SA card and see for yourself? Adaptec is a serious name and has very good products. Especially for computers that have no SATA on board, these kind of cards are needed.

    @Sanjeet

When you ran HIR, did you use the HIR "Advanced" Options button and then add the A:\ path to the set of additional paths to be searched (for drivers) by HIR?

Yes, I'll see if we can purchase that card.

Re: Adaptec Serial ATA RAID 1210SA

     Hi,

Yes I used the HIR "Advanced" Option and specified A:\ as well as A:\WIN32 (where INF and SYS files are located) A:\WIN2000 (older driver). But it still keeps selecting its own driver. I even tried all the 4 different releases of that driver http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/downloads/ms/ms_win_2000?productId=AAR-1210SA&dn=Adaptec+Serial+ATA+RAID+1210SA

But it keeps installing a Fair Driver from the Storage Craft CD itself and not the one's specified.

    Thanks,

    Sanjeet

Sanjeet, I'm going to respond to you via email.  I need to collect some files from you to diagnose this issue.

We just ordered the 1210SA.  It'll be here in 2 days.  I'll try to have a resolution for this sometime next week but I can't make promises on that as I'm juggling many tasks.

Re: Adaptec Serial ATA RAID 1210SA

After installing the 1210SA I spent the last two days working on this issue and I have found an acceptable solution.  The solution works with the existing product so you won't need an upgrade.  You just need to do a couple of extra things before HIR.  I'll post the details later today. Thanks everyone for your patience on this particular issue.
