Failed to create partition when attempt restore into Vmware

I'm attempting to test a bare-metal XP-Pro restore by booting the ShadowProtect ISO in VMWare and restoring from DVDs. However, I'm blocked at the 'restore destination', as all the partitioning options give an unhelpful 'failed to create partition' message.

I've attached the VM config file, if that helps..

I have never seen this before.  Can you create a partition manually from the Disk Map tab in the recovery environment?  Also, what version of the recovery CD are you using?  Have you tried both the Vista-based and 2003-based recovery environments, and was the result the same?  What is the size of the virtual disk and the size of the original partition of the image file you are restoring?

Re: Failed to create partition when attempt restore into Vmware

Using ISO 3.2 and the Vista environment.

I can create the partition manually from the disk map tab.

Now the restore dies with a device access error. Yes, the recover images have been verified to be good. It just seems to be a vmware issue. Is there a known good combination of vmware version/settings and recovery environment which I can try?

Here is the log from a failed verify attempt. It is the same error for the restore:

Re: Failed to create partition when attempt restore into Vmware

Hmm . . . so do you mean the verify on this image file worked elsewhere, but when you run it from within VMWare it fails as shown above?  Are you still restoring from DVDs?  Since the verify failed "on read" (when it was trying to read from the source), you may want to consider getting the image file(s) off of DVD and onto a hard disk.  Maybe VMWare's method of attaching to the host OS's optical drive is part of the problem.  I don't think I've ever tried to restore an image to VMWare from DVDs, but I'll try it out and see if I get the same problem.

Re: Failed to create partition when attempt restore into Vmware

Verify on the image files works on non-vm PC running desktop edition. This works for both the files on DVD and a local drive.

Verify fails from within vmware using ISO 3.2 vista, for both DVD and the local drive mounted as a share. The log above is for the networked drive.

With the network share the verify fails on the first file (as logged above).

With the DVDs the verify fails on the last disk (4/4).

I should note that I tried restore/verify from DVD several times before giving up because it took > 3/4 hour to reach point of failure, then trying the network drive only to discover a different problem there - at least it fails sooner!
